The above images were taken on June 10, 2006, in Pine, Arizona, during the annual Strawberry Festival. On the left is an image at the front of the festival, this year held at the Pine Community Center. On the right, a quaint bakery and ice cream shop next door; as the weathered sign indicates, it's called the Gingerbread House.

The Strawberry Festival also played host to a quilt show and competition. These images don't do justice to the workmanship and rich colors in the quilts on display at the show. My personal favorite was the second one in this series. Up close, the colors are magnificent but the stitching also lays in an intricate pattern of swirls and fleur des lis.

The images above were taken at Arizona's oldest still-standing schoolhouse, a one-room affair located 1.5 miles west of Highway 87 in Strawberry, Arizona. There's a dunce's stool and cap in the corner behind the teacher's desk and several artifacts of the time are housed behind a standing glass-fronted case. The district was established in 1884. For additional information on the schoolhouse, you can read here.

The East Verde River meanders across east-central Arizona, running just north of Payson. While this near the Mogollon Rim it is little more than a babbling brook (at least before the rainy season sets in,) it has expert-only rapids that draw in kayakers along its 34-mile length. The water level is dependent on a combination of rainfall and snow melt-off, so varies widely depending on the season. The final image in this row captures one of the pillars from the bridge on Arizona Highway 87.
