Ripples of Chocolate

poetry and artwork by LeiLani

Sonnet to My Dragon

How sweet the dragon
Creeping on my floor!
A tiny beast roaring,
Green and glittering scales
The fire-breather soaring
On imaginary wings.

A Celtic legend
Sprung fingers and toes,
Blue eyes laughing at me
And he smiles because he knows
He has victory
When he reaches for a hug.

* Dedicated to my grandson, whose name means "dragon"

Summer Haiku

Hidden treasure found
Silver ripples on the lake
Whispering my name.

Sunrise

Red feathers skyward
Ruffling in the rising sun
Clouds awakening day

Absolution

Silent and subtle
Painting palettes of shadows
Night settles in
All around my soul.
Rest comes not easy,
But welcome in measure
And slowly in dreamscape
I am once again whole.

Here in the wonder
Of unspoken heartsong
I savor the texture
Of what I hold dear.
And when the sun rises
Upon the new morning
I gather new treasures
For night's sweet frontier.

Dream Weaver

Dreams, the mind's most lush tapestries;
E'er stronger and more brightly coloured
When woven within shared souls.
The hope that shines through hopelessness
Quilting shattered fragments of despair
Broken pieces now harlequin colors made whole.

A Dream Weaver's sword wields power
Against the blackest knight,
Rewarding victor with sweet sum;
A strong and mighty power, this,
Yet it cannot do alone
What joined hearts overcome.

Sweet lovers' caresses,
Souls soar in freedom, rest now assured,
Curse turns to blessing and darkness be day.
A heart steeped in darkness arises in light
And all that is evil can never prevail
When dreamers let hearts lead the way.

Safe

Home
Bruised and bleeding
Tears and shouts
Prayers for sanctuary unheard
By whatever gods ignore me.

The eyes of the children
Beg for hope
And I have none to offer
None survives.

Laws mock us
Promising help
Promising safety
Promising a tomorrow
That never comes.

Lies upon lies
Compounding interest
And another child
Learns the ways of the world
Coming full circle
Home, bruised and bleeding.

For Kitty

Fanciful feline bounding
Word upon word upon dream;
Tangling her words and readers
Into knotted play.
She doesn't know her power
Nor will she see it;
Her words upon words
Strung across the floor of imagination.

Still uncertain
A bit afraid
She taps at the scarlet idea
Unraveling at her hand;
While we her audience
Applaud her joyously
Watching to see
The pretty picture she forms.
